Description
Liquid glass — aqueous caustic solution of Na2O(SiO2) n sodium silicates and (or) K2O(SiO2) n potassium. Less often as liquid glass use lithium silicates, for example, in electrode covering.
Receiving
For the first time liquid glass was received in 1818 by the German chemist and the mineralogist Yang Nepomuk von Fuchs.
Now it is produced by autoclaving of kremnezyomsoderzhashchy raw materials by concentrated solutions of sodium hydroxide or alloyage of quartz sand with soda. Also the ways of receiving liquid glass based on direct dissolution of siliceous raw materials (Molding, bergmeals, diatomites, etc. ) in solutions of alkalis are known with atmospheric pressure and rather low temperature (alkali liquor boiling temperature).
The characteristic of chemical composition of liquid glass is silica modul. The module shows the attitude of the silicon oxide which is contained in liquid glass to sodium oxide or to potassium oxide and characterizes silicon dioxide exit in solution. About quality of liquid glass do not judge by the size of silica modul.
One of trade names — "silicate glue".
There is a lot of ranges of application of liquid glass. It, in particular, preparations of fireproof paints and coverings on tree apply to production of acidproof cement and concrete, to treatment of fabrics, (fire - retarding agents), strengthenings of weak soil, as glue for pasting of cellulose materials, in production of electrodes, at purification of vegetable and machine oil, etc.
In combination to alcohol and the most fine sand use for creation of "ceramic" or shell forms in which after calcinating to 1000 degrees cast metal products.
Since 2008 several Japanese producers of autopolishes have begun production of polishes on the basis of liquid glass.
