Succinic acid (butandiovy acid, ethane - 1,2 - dicarboxylic acid, dicarboxyl acid) HOOC - CH2 - CH2 - COOH — dibasic saturated carboxylic acid. Colourless crystals, soluble in water and alcohol. Succinic acid contains in insignificant quantity in brown coal and different pitches and in amber, is found in many plants.
Receiving
The industry receives succinic acid (butandiovy acid, ethane - 1,2 - dicarboxylic acid) usually hydrogenation of maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, and also by other methods.
Application
Succinic acid is used
• for receiving some plastic, elastomers, polyester and alkyd resins,
• for synthesis of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, arsenic - and mercury - containing medicines and in analytical chemistry.
• as fertilizer. Succinic acid accelerates maturing of fruits, increases productivity, increases the content of vitamins and sugar in fruits. Increases cold constancy, drought resistance and resilience to diseases.
• in the food industry, as food supplement of E363
