STH methyl tert-butyl ether for hromatogr. (3 ml)

Methyl tert butyl ether - colorless liquid with radio smell; let's dissolve in ethanol, diethyl ether, it is bad - in water (4,6% at 20 °C); forms constant boiling mixtures with water, methanol. When heating it is above 460 °C, and also when heating with catalysts decays on methanol and isobutylene. Does not form peroxide connections.

In chemical industry methyl tert butyl ether is received interaction of isobutylene with methanol on acid catalysts (usually cation exchangers) with pressure of 1 - 2 MPas and temperatures below 100 °C.

Use of MTBE as component of gasolines (octane value of mixing 117, by research method 115 - 135) allows to receive high - octane fuel and to considerably reduce use of anti - detonator tetraethyllead. Besides, addition of methyl tert butyl ether provides more complete combustion of motor fuel. Shortcoming is need of additives of significant amounts of MTBE for achievement of required octane value of gasoline (10 - 15% ).
